The razzle and dazzle of the West End comes to Surgeons’ Hall in Best of the West End Musicals.
It’s a simple concept: a showcase of songs from the world’s best-loved musicals. From timeless classics to modern favourites, this high-energy celebration brings together iconic anthems, heartfelt ballads and show-stopping numbers. The intimate setting at Surgeons’ Hall may be somewhat different from the grand stages of the West End, but the talent is surely matched.
With powerhouse vocals, emotional storytelling and dazzling theatrical flair, Best of the West End Musicals captures the spirit of London’s greatest stages. The two performers demonstrate admirable versatility in their vocals, from the Cockney accents of Oliver! to hitting the high notes of The Phantom of the Opera, and so much in between. With such a varied programme, there’s almost sure to be something for all musical theatre lovers.
The two performers also act as hosts, and natural hosts they are too, tying the show together with humour and good-natured banter. Their love for musical theatre and for performing together is evident through the natural rapport they have with each other and with the audience. They welcome and encourage our involvement, and our audience claps, cheers and sings along enthusiastically.
Although a simple concept, a show like this works for the Edinburgh Fringe by making the West End accessible for those who might not be able to travel to London. This way, we get a pick and mix of a multitude of shows in a handy 45-minute performance. Judging by the reaction of our audience, I don’t think we’d have grumbled if it had gone on twice as long.
An uplifting concert that showcases the breadth and brilliance of musical theatre, Best of the West End Musicals proves there’s absolutely no business like show business.
