This is a uniquely challenging review to write. Fundamentally, the more you know about Deepfake before you experience it, the less impactful it becomes. Yet I desperately want to spread the word on this show’s incredible impact. I will attempt to proceed spoiler-free.
In this one-of-a-kind Fringe show, the singular audience member plays the role of Alex Doe, the head of PR of a company called MirrorMinds. MirrorMinds is creating a brand-new AI product and needs your opinion for the go-ahead. It is up to you to evaluate how ethically sound this product is. As you walk into the space and find a co-worker waiting for you on Zoom, it is remarkable just how authentic the office design is. There is a Rubik’s Cube for you to play with, calendars, and photos of family members. Grace Goheen and Minh-Anh Day have created an utterly immersive experience for audience members.
Admittedly, the ethical debate that follows regarding AI is not original. By now, the arguments of ‘it steals from creatives’ and ‘there’s no consent’ are somewhat generic and widespread, although being placed seemingly in a position of power is thrilling. Likewise, the Zoom performers, there is a much-rotated cast, are masters at improvising to your questions and comments.
However, it is an unbelievable twist that truly takes this show to the next level. I shan’t spoil it, but take my word when I say it is one of the most disturbing, bone-chilling moments of theatre I have witnessed. In fact, it is so disconcerting that I was forced to contemplate the ethical issues of such a stunt. I think ultimately the message the company are pushing is far too important for any discomfort to stand in its way. This combination of thoughtful debate and visceral horror makes this production an incredibly emotional experience.
Deepfake’s concept is simple and power packed into 15 minutes, yet generates an unbelievably effective result. Such an exciting mini piece of theatre could only have been created by a group of extremely talented humans. It’s horrifying to be a part of, but vital theatre.
