Twenty four hours after watching Fantasy World Adventures Mega Park! The Musical, its gloriously infectious title song is still lodged firmly in my head. For a Fringe debut, FWAMP! Theatre Company land with remarkable confidence, delivering a delightfully chaotic musical comedy packed with heart, humour and an irresistible sense of fun.

Set within the sprawling world of a giant theme park, the show introduces a colourful cast of characters, from an outrageously flirtatious maintenance crew to designers, ride operators and mascots. At the centre of it all is Teddy Mega, heir to the Fantasy World Adventure Mega Park empire following the mysterious death of his father. The problem is that Teddy has absolutely no interest in taking over the family business.

Instead, Teddy dreams of spending his days entertaining guests as the park’s beloved mascot, much to the frustration of his determined mother. With the support of his love interest Pippa and work experience student Jason, Teddy must navigate questions of identity, ambition and family expectation, all while thwarting a rival theme park owner intent on stealing the park’s best ideas.

Written by Abbie Freeston, with music by Matthew Stanley, this is a laugh out loud musical that wears its eccentricity proudly. The script crackles with wit and absurd humour, yet never loses sight of the warmth at its core. Beneath the silliness lies a surprisingly relatable story about finding the courage to follow your own path, even when everyone around you expects something different.

Stanley’s upbeat score is consistently entertaining, while Freeston’s camp choreography brings an added layer of joy to the production. Every musical number feels designed to leave a smile on the audience’s face, and more often than not it succeeds.

Owen Wardle gives a hugely endearing performance as Teddy, capturing both the character’s uncertainty and quiet determination. David Bygraves brings charisma and confidence to Jason, while Maeve Gallagher is wonderfully engaging as Pippa. Gee Case Watson nearly steals the show altogether with a brilliantly observed comic turn as Barb, delivering some of the evening’s biggest laughs.

There are moments when the balance between band and vocals could be more refined, with some lyrics occasionally lost beneath the music. Yet when the company come together in full ensemble, the energy is undeniable and the collective vocal sound is genuinely impressive.

Any rough edges are easily forgiven because Fantasy World Adventures Mega Park! The Musical achieves exactly what it sets out to do. Joyful, funny and unapologetically daft, it is a thrilling Fringe night out that leaves audiences grinning long after they’ve disembarked this thrilling ride.
