Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyHere Comes Gudong is an adventure story about an eccentric crew of mythical animals exploring the source of “Gudong!”. Produced by Roarrr Theatre, this production is full of mysterious charm and cultural fusion.

This is an immersive puppet adventure offering a rich sensory experience. A curious little monkey hears a strange “Gudong!” sound and embarks on an exciting journey. Along the way, the monkey meets a fox who enjoys studying all kinds of unusual sounds, and a very clever turtle. Although the answer to this riddle doesn’t involve mystical powers, what they gain from this remarkable experience is priceless. The enthusiastic expressions and movements of the actors — Mary Emma He, Aidan Harris, Sunny Jie Liu, and Mingyu Ding — make the audience feel as though they are watching a cartoon come to life.

The distinctive feature of Here Comes Gudong is its sensory approach and the incorporation of intangible cultural heritage. Puppetry designer and maker Jessica Wenjing Ji and movement director Mingyu Ding allow the Chinese mythological figure Jingwei to weave freely through the stage and audience. The use of Chinese shadow puppetry is an absolute delight and a magical experience for both children and parents. “Jingwei myths meet the Loch Ness Monster.” Through this enchanting adventure, the cultural interactions between China and the Western world provide a valuable opportunity to develop a child’s international perspective and appreciation of diverse aesthetics.

This production also focuses on ecological consciousness. The loud noise from the fox’s radio suggests that urban expansion threatens the natural environment. Rather than imposing this viewpoint directly on children, it is a more intelligent approach to promote environmental protection awareness through such reflective methods, especially in productions aimed at children.

Here Comes Gudong is an engaging, imaginative puppetry adventure that offers a rich cross-cultural experience.
