Jamie Armitage, the co-director of hit production Six The Musical and writer of An Interrogation, is set to captivate audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe with this latest drama.

The gripping police procedural thriller promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Inspired by a real-life incident, Armitage’s play delves into the depths of deception and the unexpected twists that lie beneath the surface.

“I’ve been incredibly excited about this play for several years. I can’t wait to bring this electrifying experience to the stages of Edinburgh,” Armitage shares.

Armitage’s journey to create An Interrogation began with an enjoyment of true crime. Fascinated by cases where confessions unfolded within the interrogation room, Jamie stumbled upon a reference to a chilling Canadian case involving Russell Williams.

“I watched hours of footage from the police interviews, transfixed by the astounding transformation of a highly respected air force commander into a serial killer,” Armitage reveals.

While contemplating the idea of creating a verbatim version of the events, Armitage felt the urge to adapt the story within a British cultural context. Seeking to explore the themes and issues that resonate with a British audience, adding an additional layer of depth to the narrative.

“I shifted the setting to the UK, hoping to unlock even more for the audience,” Armitage explains.

Condensing the 10 hours of gripping footage into a compelling stage production posed a creative challenge. Armitage diligently sifted through the material, focusing on the moments that captivated viewers the most.

“I crafted a more concise and impactful narrative that captures the essence of the story while maintaining its intensity and suspense,” says Jamie.

Returning to the Edinburgh Fringe, Armitage understands the significance of this vibrant artistic platform in launching new works.

“The festival is a hotbed for exciting new ideas and an audience eager to discover the unexpected,” Armitage reflects. “The Fringe’s feverish atmosphere, where word-of-mouth travels rapidly, provides a unique opportunity for shows to gain momentum and reach a diverse and enthusiastic audience.”

Reflecting on previous success, Armitage acknowledges the differences between An Interrogation and Six, “Each project has its own distinct qualities. ‘An Interrogation’ is an exciting new endeavour, free from direct comparisons”

As the writer of An Interrogation, Jamie Armitage has poured years of dedication into the play’s development. The process spans several years, from the initial encounter with the real case, through intense research and creative exploration, to the final stages of refining the script.

“The journey has been a labour of love, evolving alongside the shifting cultural landscape and the profound conversations surrounding policing and the justice system,” Armitage reflects. “I strive to create a thought-provoking piece that resonates with audiences on multiple levels.”

Collaborating with renowned producer Ellie Keel, Armitage found a true partner who shares a passion and dedication to the craft.

“Ellie’s expertise and enthusiasm have made the creative journey even more exhilarating,” Armitage reveals. “We navigate the challenges and possibilities together.”

With the cast of An Interrogation just announced, Jamie confirms that it will be a three-hander. This decision allows the story to expand beyond the confines of the interrogation room, “With a three-hander production, we can delve deeper into the story and explore wider themes,” Armitage explains.

Taking An Interrogation to the Edinburgh Fringe, Jamie looks forward to engaging audiences with the enthralling suspense, heart-pounding moments, and thought-provoking themes embedded within the play.

“I hope to leave audiences exhilarated and inspired, having experienced a thrilling tale brought to life by a team dedicated to pushing artistic boundaries,” Armitage expresses.

An Interrogation promises to be an unforgettable addition to the Edinburgh Fringe, showcasing Jamie Armitage’s masterful storytelling and unwavering commitment to delivering top-tier theatrical experiences.

“I can’t wait for audiences to experience ‘An Interrogation’ and witness the enthralling journey we have created,” Jamie concludes.
