Edinburgh Interview: Joe Sutherland on Joe Sutherland: Sour

Joe Sutherland Sour

Joe Sutherland: Sour is coming to Banshee Labyrinth what can you tell us about it?

It’s a new stand-up show about pop reunions, LGBT sandwiches and trendy mental health issues.

Is it based on real events?

Oh yeah baby.

What inspired you to write this show?

I had a friend in school who went from being the person who taught me what Pride is all about, to being the first person I know to go over to the ‘dark side’. I won’t say more than that, but I guess it freaked me out and all I could do was try and write about it. I’m just sick of June being the month in which queer people are used by brands and banks as a way of propping up their corporate egos, whilst in the real world queer people can still do bad things, or have horrific things done to them. I wanted to put all that together and hope that it might resonate with someone else.

How does it feel to be at Banshee Labyrinth?

Exciting! It’s probably the best room on the entire fringe. So I just hope to do it justice by filling it with laughter and goodness.

What’s the one thing about this show makes it different from all the rest?

I’m doing it. And you can guarantee there’s only one of me. No-one else is this annoying.

Who will Joe Sutherland: Sour appeal to the most?

Anyone who wants to see themselves represented by an LGBT sandwich. After all, who doesn’t want to identify as a lil’ snack?

Joe Sutherland: Sour is at Banshee Labyrinth 3rd – 25th August (not 12th)
