Laura Kleinbaum is set to bring a fresh and immersive experience to the Edinburgh Fringe with her new musical, House of Cleopatra. This production promises to transport audiences to the legendary world of Cleopatra, reimagined as a vibrant, inclusive, disco pop EDM-fuelled fever dream. We sat down with Laura to delve into the inspiration behind this unique show and what audiences can expect.
Kleinbaum describes House of Cleopatra as an “immersive party musical” that captures the essence of Cleopatra’s legendary status. “Cleopatra was one of the most progressive and powerful rulers in the ancient world, and her parties were also amazing,” she explains. The show aims to recreate this atmosphere, inviting the audience to participate in a utopian night that also marks the fall of Egypt. “You’ll see major drama unfold in real time while you’re partying in the palace,” she adds, highlighting the unique blend of entertainment and historical drama.
The decision to focus on Cleopatra stemmed from Kleinbaum’s fascination with the historical figure’s multifaceted legacy. “Cleopatra is arguably the most famous ruler ever, but there’s so much about her that people don’t know,” she says. While many are familiar with her romantic entanglements, Kleinbaum wanted to shine a light on Cleopatra’s prowess as a general and leader of a progressive kingdom. “We wanted to celebrate that,” she notes, emphasizing the importance of showcasing a powerful woman in history.
Working alongside Jeff Daye, who composed the music for the show, has been a fruitful collaboration for Kleinbaum. “Jeff and I were introduced years ago by our producer in New York. We hit it off right away because we have similar tastes,” she recalls. Initially, they were tasked with writing a musical about a DJ, but they pivoted to focus on Cleopatra, a decision that has clearly paid off.
The show had a successful run off-Broadway, which provided valuable insights for its creators. “The off-Broadway run was a beautiful but quick and dirty experience,” Kleinbaum reflects. The pandemic interrupted their momentum, but the opportunity to bring the show to Edinburgh allowed them to make significant improvements. “We wrote a new opening number, changed the ending, and tightened everything up,” she says, ensuring the show is in top form for its Fringe debut.
This marks the first time Kleinbaum and Daye are bringing a show to the Edinburgh Fringe, an experience they are eagerly anticipating. “Everyone I’ve talked to says it’s the most magical place, and you can’t overhype it,” Kleinbaum enthuses. She is particularly excited about the opportunity to share their work with a broader audience and immerse themselves in the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
One of the standout aspects of House of Cleopatra is its immersive nature. Kleinbaum explains that the audience can expect to be fully engaged from the moment they enter the venue. “When you enter the building, there will already be music and people setting the scene,” she says. Inside, attendees can choose to sit, stand, dance, and interact with the actors, creating a dynamic and participatory experience. “There’s a full spectrum of fun to be had,” she promises.
Kleinbaum is also grateful for the support from Alchemation, the producers behind the show. “They are wonderful,” she says. Although rehearsals are set to begin in London soon, she feels confident knowing they are in good hands with such an accomplished production team.
As the Fringe approaches, Kleinbaum is looking forward to the unique experience of flyering to attract audiences. “If you want to come to a really fun party with a lot of drama set in ancient Egypt at Cleopatra’s Palace, come tonight at 11pm,” she says, capturing the essence of what makes House of Cleopatra a must-see show.
Ultimately, Kleinbaum hopes that the inclusive and welcoming world of Cleopatra’s Alexandria will resonate with Fringe audiences. “Our version of Cleopatra’s Alexandria is a welcoming, inclusive place where everyone belongs,” she says, underscoring the show’s message of belonging and acceptance.
