We all make mistakes, but rarely do they change the course of human history. From comedian and historian Paul Coulter comes 5 Mistakes That Changed History, a John Oliver-meets-Horrible Histories tour of five mistakes that impacted our world. Blending history, storytelling and comedy, 5 Mistakes That Changed History is perfect for history lovers, the history-curious and anyone who loves to learn new things, whilst having a laugh.

Returning after a hugely successful sold-out run at Edinburgh and the Australian festival circuit in 2023, Coulter presents an all-new show using intensive research to uncover a diverse range of mistakes from around the world. Ranging from small mishaps that had an impact on culture or food, to epic, empire-ending catastrophes by titans of history, this hilarious and fascinating show reveals all.

5 Mistakes That Changed History fuses comedy, storytelling and history to take audiences on a journey through the past, learning incredible things about our world in an all-new way. Whether you loved or hated history at school, this is the show for you. Class credit not provided.

Creator Paul Coulter comments, Overcooking your dinner or spilling your tea might seem like a monumental mistake in the moment, but in hindsight it’s hardly going to change the course of human history. I’ve combed through the archives, read mountains of books (my library card got a workout!), and carefully crafted a varied and interesting mix of stories that are guaranteed to surprise, entertain, and fascinate audiences with plenty of laughs along the way.

Venue: Assembly Studios (Studio Three), George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LH
