Edinburgh Preview: Ken Cheng – Best Dad Ever at Bedlam Theatre

Ken Cheng

Dave’s Joke of The Fringe 2017 winner Ken Cheng is back with his second show following his critically acclaimed debut hour.

Born to Chinese immigrants in the UK, Ken didn’t have the most typical upbringing. Best Dad Ever is a tale of his unique childhood, exploring his obsession with toy lambs and his complicated relationship with his parents. He is aided once again by his trusty PowerPoint presentation.

It’s been a fantastic year for Ken. Since last year’s festival, he’s filmed for Comedy Central At The Comedy Store (Comedy Central) and Celebrity Eggheads (BBC One), was featured online as one of Comedy Central’s Ones To Watch and has his own four-part BBC Radio 4 series Ken Cheng: Chinese Comedian coming out Autumn 2018.

Alongside TV and radio, Ken has a growing online audience – particularly on Twitter. On his Twitter thread, his endeavour to disrespect every country’s flag one by one went viral and was featured in The Independent (“hilarious”).

His show last year, Chinese Comedian, was one of the most popular debut shows of the Fringe Festival regularly selling out at The Pleasance. He has since enjoyed sold out runs at the Vaults Festival and was selected to perform the show at The British Library in March 2018.

Ken burst onto the UK comedy scene back in 2015 when he reached the final of the BBC New Comedy Award. Reviewing the awards, Chortle’s Steve Bennett thought he “deserved to win”. He went on to film his own BBC Three Top Ten, Proverbs Ken Cheng Hates, was selected for the BBC New Talent Hotlist in 2017 and appeared in Liam Williams’ BBC Radio 4 show Ladhood.
