IIIII – About the Art of Letting Go at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows in The Beauty plays until the 24th of August and is an absorbing, creative, and thoughtful experience. The show, housed in a beautiful traditional venue, offers a blend of physical grace and musical innovation that captivates the audience.
Performer Sandra Hanschitz, a master of the Cyr wheel, moves with elegance, tracing mesmerising patterns across the floor. Her skill is matched by a haunting, energetic soundtrack, created largely live by the accompanying musician Joel Beierer. Impressively, every sound we hear was produced by the wheel itself, creatively manipulated in both recorded and real-time to form the show’s unique auditory landscape.
Admittedly, the show is a bit of a slow burner. At first, a cynical mind might wonder if the initial setup is just two exceptionally talented individuals taking their time assembling the wheel. However, as the performance unfolds, it becomes clear that the synergy between sound, light, and movement is what makes IIIII – About the Art of Letting Go an enchanting experience. The gradual build-up leads to a stunning display of artistry where each element works in harmony to maintain a palpable atmosphere.
That said, the show’s pacing might not justify its full 45-minute runtime. One could argue that it would shine even brighter as part of a broader showcase featuring a variety of skills. Nonetheless, the commitment to craft and the seamless integration of all elements make IIIII – About the Art of Letting Go a worthwhile experience for those who appreciate the subtle, meditative power of circus art.
