Edinburgh Review: Magic Gareth: Level Up! At Pleasance Courtyard

“Fun and laughs for all ages”

Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyMagic Gareth: Level Up! takes us on a magical adventure in the style of a classic console game with missions to be completed by the kids (both little and big) in the audience.

There is mild peril in the form of a battle against Evil Gareth, who has stolen our lovely unicorn and we have our precious lives (heart shaped balloons) to use in tasks that we must not lose. Think Taskmaster but aimed at kids.

Our host is charismatic, witty and great with the audience both on and off stage. There’s none of the pretentious preening we sometimes see with Magicians, rather we are gifted 45 minutes of engaging presence, appropriately pitched jokes and a mixture of genuinely impressive magic and hilariously naff trickery.

Magic Gareth: Level Up! is well worth a visit with the children. I saw some as young as three that were glued to him throughout and my eight year old loved it. Shouting out, joining in where prompted (and sometimes not, which was always excellently navigated by Magic Gareth) and whooping with triumph at our inevitable victory. Fun and laughs for all ages.

Magic Gareth: Level Up! is playing at the Pleasance Courtyard Above venue until the 20th of August.
