Edinburgh Review: Moon We Cannot Get Out at Pleasance Below

Moon We Cannot Get Out

Moon We Cannot Get Out

Having only made their Fringe debut last year, Moon return to Edinburgh with a brand-new sketch comedy show – Moon: We Cannot Get Out.  Comprised of Jack Chisnall and Joshua Dolphin, who are both former members of the Oxford Revue, this comedy hour has an uncanny knack of astounding its audience when they least expect it.

Based on their experiences of last year’s fringe, when technical problems at their venue plagued their run, We Cannot Get Out follows the premise that this year’s venue is trying to kill them, throwing up lots of horror-esque stunts mixed through the comedy sketches.

This is very physical and slapstick comedy, and it works extremely well, Joshua Dolphin in particular uses his body movements and facial expressions to create some fantastic comedic moments.  The pair tackle sketches that are quite long and chunky, but are incredibly well thought out.

Tackling everything from a game of Monopoly to the Da Vinci Code, including a very funny sketch about Peter Pan and Wendy, Moon have developed a show that will appeal to a wide range of comedy fans.  In one sketch, Jack Chisnall delivers a comedic monologue of epic proportions, it has to be one of the most terrific comedy moments at the Fringe this year, and not only is the sketch funny but Chisnall’s delivery is on point.

The theme of the room trying to kill them perhaps doesn’t work as well, it provides a few well-placed jokes but to be honest this sketch hour would work just as well on its own.  Moon: We Cannot Get Out might be a little rough around the edges, but it is startlingly funny and I would have quite happily sat through another hour of material of this quality.
