The Menier Chocolate Factory has announced that Toby Stephens will play Dr. Martin Dysart in Peter Shaffer’s award‑winning psychological drama, presented in a co‑production with Theatre Royal Bath. The production opens at the Menier on 18 May, following previews from 8 May, and runs until 27 June before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath from 13 to 25 July.

The creative team features Paul Farnsworth as Set and Costume Designer, Paul Pyant as Lighting Designer, Adam Cork as Composer and Sound Designer, and James Cousins as Movement Director.

Full casting will be revealed soon.

Equus explores the disturbing case of a 17‑year‑old who blinds six horses, and the psychiatrist who attempts to uncover the truth while grappling with his own sense of purpose. Shaffer’s play is regarded as a modern masterpiece.

Stephens’ extensive stage career includes roles with the RSC, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Chichester Festival Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and more. His screen credits range from Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Alex Rider to Lost in Space and Die Another Day.
