The Menier Chocolate Factory has unveiled first-look production photography for Tru, the acclaimed play by Jay Presson Allen, directed by Rob Ashford.
The production stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Truman Capote, alongside Charlotte d’Amboise, and runs until 14 November 2026 following previews that began earlier this month.
Drawn entirely from Capote’s own words, Tru offers an intimate portrait of the celebrated writer during a turbulent period in his life. Set in December 1975, the play finds Capote alone in his New York apartment, grappling with the fallout from a scandal that cost him the friendships and social standing he cherished.
The production reunites Ferguson, d’Amboise and director Rob Ashford, who previously collaborated on an earlier presentation of the work in New York.
Ferguson is best known to international audiences for his portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett in the multi-award-winning television comedy Modern Family. His recent stage credits include Here We Are at the National Theatre and Jesus Christ Superstar at The London Palladium.
Broadway veteran Charlotte d’Amboise joins the cast following a distinguished stage career that includes Tony Award nominations for A Chorus Line and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, as well as numerous acclaimed performances in productions including Chicago, Company and Pippin.
The creative team includes set designer Paul Farnsworth, costume designer Jaimal Odedra, lighting designer Jamie Platt, sound designer Adam Cork and associate director Kate Tydman.
Originally staged in 1989, Tru remains one of the most celebrated theatrical portraits of Truman Capote, blending humour and heartbreak as it explores the consequences of fame, friendship and artistic ambition.
