Jermyn Street Theatre has released first look production images from Richard Eyre’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, directed by Carne Deputy Director Kwame Owusu.
The production, which opened this week at Jermyn Street Theatre, stars Flora Montgomery as Helene, Joe Pitts as Oswald, Oliver Alvin-Wilson as Pastor Manders, Cecilia Appiah as Regina and Peter F. Gardiner as Jacob.
Eyre’s contemporary adaptation brings Ibsen’s classic drama into sharp focus for modern audiences, exploring themes of family secrets, inherited guilt, moral responsibility and social expectation.
Set in Norway in 1890, the story follows Helene as she is reunited with her son Oswald after years apart. As they gather for the opening of an orphanage built in memory of Oswald’s late father, long-buried truths begin to surface, threatening to unravel the family.
Kwame Owusu directs the production, with design by Cara Evans, costumes by Natalie Johnson, lighting by Ben Ormerod, sound and composition by Fran Amewudah-Rivers, casting by Matthew Dewsbury CDG and assistant direction by Magnús Thorlacius.
Speaking when the cast was announced, Owusu said: “I’m so thrilled to be working with such an incredible cast of actors, as we stage this extraordinary modern classic this autumn. I’ve loved working with the brilliant Matthew Dewsbury to assemble this ensemble, and I’m so excited for us all to get started in rehearsals soon.”
Richard Eyre’s adaptation of Ghosts examines the desire to break free from the past and asks what personal cost that freedom may demand. More than 140 years after its original publication, Ibsen’s powerful drama continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.
The production runs at Jermyn Street Theatre until 14 November 2026.
