New production images have been released for The Fifth Step, the acclaimed play by David Ireland, now playing at @sohoplace in London’s West End.

Starring Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman, The Fifth Step is directed by Finn den Hertog and runs for a strictly limited 11-week season until 26 July 2025.

Tickets remain available throughout the run, with £25 day seats offered in person at the @sohoplace box office from 11am daily. These are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to two per customer.

Originally staged at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024, the production has been reimagined for its West End premiere. The in-the-round setting of @sohoplace offers an intimate experience for audiences.

Jack Lowden reprises his role as Luka, joined by Martin Freeman as James, in this unflinching and darkly funny exploration of addiction, masculinity, and faith.

“Step 1: honesty.
Step 2: faith.
Step 3: surrender.
Step 4: self-examination.”

After years in the 12-step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous, James agrees to sponsor newcomer Luka. As their bond deepens over coffee and shared stories, they approach Step 5—confession.

But as Luka prepares to reveal his secrets, it becomes clear that James has his own truths to confront—ones that could jeopardise both their recoveries.

The Fifth Step is produced by Neal Street Productions, Playful Productions and National Theatre of Scotland, in association with Nica Burns. The production is currently in previews, with press night scheduled for 19 May.
