First look rehearsal images have been released for Choir Boy ahead of its opening at Stratford East.

The production and full cast were previously announced, and these newly released rehearsal shots offer an early glimpse of Nancy Medina’s acclaimed staging as it prepares to return to London.

Choir Boy, written by Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, runs from 26 March to 25 April 2026, with Press Night on 31 March.

The production was the centrepiece of Medina’s first season as Artistic Director at Bristol Old Vic in 2023, where it won three Black British Theatre Awards including Best Production and Best Director.

Terique Jarrett reprises his award-winning role as Pharus. He is joined once again by Michael Ahomka-Lindsay, Daon Broni, Khalid Daley and Martin Turner.

Rabi Kondé and Freddie MacBruce newly join the cast for this Stratford East run.

Set at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, the play follows Pharus, a gifted young singer whose confidence is shaken after an incident with a fellow student.

The story navigates themes of identity, race, sexuality, spirituality and brotherhood, and is enriched with soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns and spirituals.

Choir Boy is presented by Stratford East and was originally produced by Bristol Old Vic.

The creative team includes Tatenda Shamiso as Co-Director, Max Johns as Set and Costume Designer, Femi Temowo as Arranger and Musical Director, Donato Wharton as Composer and Sound Designer and Nao Nagai as Lighting Designer.

Additional creatives include Ingrid MacKinnon as Movement Director and Intimacy Coordinator, Julia Horan CDG as Casting Director, Aundrea Fudge as Voice and Dialect Coach and Ewa Emini as Associate Movement Director.

The production team features Gemma Brooks as Production Manager, Vanessa Sutherland as Company Stage Manager, Theodore Hung as Deputy Stage Manager and Emily Mei-Ling Pearce as Assistant Stage Manager.
