The Donmar Warehouse has unveiled first-look rehearsal photography for Ilford Boy, Danny Lee Wynter’s funny and moving new drama, directed by Donmar Artistic Director Tim Sheader.
The production runs from 10 October to 28 November 2026, with an official press night on 20 October.
Set in 1990s East London, Ilford Boy follows mixed-race teenager Ted Martin as he navigates life in a chaotic family home. When Patrick arrives, bringing a new outlook, a love of show tunes and a sense of possibility, Ted begins to see a different future for himself.
The cast includes Lindsey Coulson as Eileen, Cary Crankson as Trevor, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr as Ken, Aaron Gill as Raj, Charlotte Jaconelli as Ann, Jodie McNee as Jackie, Craig Stein as Patrick, Leo Whitfield-Harris as Ted and Ria Zmitrowicz as Tillie.
Directed by Tim Sheader, the production features set design by Peter McKintosh, costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting design by Aideen Malone, sound design by Tony Gayle, choreography and intimacy direction by Ebony Molina and music supervision by Eamonn O’Dwyer.
Danny Lee Wynter’s new play explores identity, family, friendship and belonging, charting Ted’s coming-of-age journey with humour, heart and a soundtrack of show tunes.
Wynter is best known as an actor and campaigner, receiving an Olivier Award nomination for The Normal Heart and founding the representation campaign group Act For Change. Ilford Boy follows his acclaimed debut play Black Superhero, which premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2023.
The release of rehearsal images offers audiences a first glimpse of the production ahead of its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse this autumn.
