New first look rehearsal images have been released for the world premiere stage adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House, offering audiences an early look at the cast as they prepare to bring Shirley Jackson’s iconic supernatural thriller to the stage.
Adapted by Olivier and BAFTA Award-winning writer Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine, the production opens at Salisbury Playhouse on 11 September before embarking on a UK tour that includes Richmond Theatre, Theatr Clwyd, Theatre Royal Brighton, Palace Theatre Manchester, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, Royal Lyceum Theatre and Cambridge Arts Theatre.
The newly released rehearsal images feature cast members Jasper Britton, Jemma Churchill, Sian Howard, Sophie Lenglinger, Robin Morrissey and Clancy Ryan as they begin work on the atmospheric new production.
Based on Jackson’s celebrated novel, widely regarded as one of the greatest works of supernatural fiction, the story follows a group of investigators who enter the mysterious Hill House, only to find themselves confronted by increasingly unsettling and unexplained events.
The production marks the first stage adaptation of the novel by Stef Smith, whose previous work includes Olivier Award-winning Roadkill and BAFTA-winning television drama Float.
Speaking when the cast was announced, Smith said: “Shirley Jackson created one of the greatest haunted house stories ever written, and it’s an absolute honour to adapt it for the stage. I’m so excited by this cast, whose talent, sensitivity and imagination will breathe new life into these characters. I can’t wait for audiences to experience The Haunting of Hill House in a completely new way.”
The creative team includes designer Ti Green, lighting designer Chris Davey, sound designer Johnny Edwards, composer Harry Blake, video designer Duncan McLean, illusion designer Will Houstoun, movement director Georgina Lamb and associate director Bobbie-Jean Henning.
Described as a production that blurs the line between heart-thumping suspense and the supernatural, The Haunting of Hill House promises a theatrical experience that will leave audiences questioning what is real long after the curtain falls.
