First look rehearsal images have been released for Trainspotting The Musical, offering a glimpse into the highly anticipated world premiere arriving in the West End this July.
Written by Irvine Welsh and directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the new musical will open at Theatre Royal Haymarket on Wednesday 15 July, bringing the iconic story of Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud to the stage.
The newly released images capture the energy of rehearsals as the company prepares to bring the cult classic to life with a live band and a score blending tracks from the original film with new material.
Robbie Scott will lead the cast as Renton, marking his West End debut, with further casting still to be announced.
The musical revisits the groundbreaking story that first shocked audiences in Welsh’s debut novel and its acclaimed 1996 film adaptation, now reimagined for a new generation.
Irvine Welsh said: “This musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. The various stage adaptations of Trainspotting have become acclaimed and moving theatrical experiences and the soundtrack to the movie is obviously iconic. So it made sense to put the music and words together to create an explosive, provocative and entertaining show. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also really need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off – it’s what being human is all about – and they’ll be well served with this too.”
With music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh, the production promises a bold and confrontational theatrical experience that reflects contemporary Britain while celebrating the rebellious spirit that made Trainspotting a cultural phenomenon.
