Talawa Theatre Company, the UK’s leading Black British theatre company, will debut a powerful new outdoor performance, Fragments of Us, at this year’s Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF).
The performance will take place on Thursday 4th September at General Gordon Square, Woolwich, with showings at 4pm and 6:30pm.
Created in collaboration with contemporary dance company FUBUNATION and theatre artist Sonia Hughes, Fragments of Us blends movement and spoken word to spotlight Black voices and lived experiences.
Audiences will be invited into an intimate and interactive performance, where a cast of Black performers share personal stories—ranging from joy and love to struggle and loss—through dance and dialogue.
Fragments of Us explores themes of resilience, identity, and vulnerability, while maintaining a close connection with its audience through spontaneous interactions and rhythmic choreography rooted in Hip Hop and African styles.
Michael Buffong, Artistic Director of Talawa, said:
“Drawing on personal lived experiences, this piece delves into the relationships black men have with each other and with the world.”
The production has been developed through Talawa’s creative pipeline since 2020, with access to Talawa Studio and mentorship from the company’s team. This GDIF performance offers a preview of what will evolve into a full-length work.
Fragments of Us celebrates the strength of brotherhood and the power of storytelling, promising to leave audiences both moved and inspired to dance in the streets.
