The Almeida Theatre has announced the full cast for its upcoming revival of Golden Boy, led by BAFTA winner Josh O’Connor.
Joining O’Connor are Jason Barnett, Richard Fleeshman, David Ganly, Patrick Martins, Daniel Mays, Oliver Ryan, Hayley Squires, Stanley Townsend, Zubin Varla and Nicholas Woodeson.
Directed by Olivier Award winner Sam Yates, the production begins previews on 9 September, with opening night on 15 September, and runs until 31 October.
Golden Boy, written by Clifford Odets, is set in 1930s New York at the height of the Great Depression.
It follows Joe Bonaparte, a gifted violinist whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads him into the brutal world of professional boxing.
Caught between artistic ambition, family expectations and a dangerous new path, Joe must confront what he is willing to sacrifice in his search for success.
The production will feature a live string quartet, underscoring the tension between Joe’s musical talent and his boxing career.
Sam Yates leads a creative team including set and costume designer Rosanna Vize, lighting designer James Farncombe, sound designer Dan Balfour and composer Isobel Waller-Bridge.
The Almeida has also confirmed that Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms, directed by Ebenezer Bamgboye, will run from 10 November to 19 December, with tickets for both productions now on general sale.
