The Royal Shakespeare Company’s sparkling new adaptation of The Constant Wife by Laura Wade will play York Theatre Royal from Monday 26 January to Saturday 31 January.
Directed by Tamara Harvey, Co-Artistic Director of the RSC, this witty reimagining of W. Somerset Maugham’s classic comedy stars Kara Tointon as Constance. Wade, an Olivier Award-winning playwright, is best known for Home, I’m Darling and the hit television series Rivals.
The cast also features Jules Brown as Mortimer, Sara Crowe as Mrs Culver, Tim Delap as John, Gloria Onitiri as Marie-Louise, Alex Mugnaioni as Bernard, Philip Rham as Bentley, and Amy Vicary-Smith as Martha. Completing the company are Sam Flint, Jocasta King and Jane Lambert.
Set in 1927, the play follows Constance, a seemingly perfect wife and mother whose husband is as devoted to her as he is to his mistress—who happens to be her best friend. Originally described as “a sparkling comedy of ill manners,” Wade’s adaptation promises sharp humour and modern resonance.
Producer David Pugh said:
“I’m delighted to be bringing a production of such class and comedy, that evolves the wit of Somerset Maugham with the brilliance of Laura Wade to theatres all around the country at prices that people can afford.”
The creative team includes original music by Jamie Cullum, set and co-costume design by Anna Fleischle, lighting by Sally Ferguson, and sound design by Claire Windsor.
