The Menier Chocolate Factory has confirmed full casting for its major revival of Equus, presented in co-production with Theatre Royal Bath Productions. The production previews from 8 May and opens on 18 May, running until 4 July before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath from 14 to 25 July.
Toby Stephens plays Dr. Martin Dysart, joined by Amanda Abbington as Hesther Salomon, Bella Aubin as Jill Mason and Noah Valentine as Alan Strang. The cast also includes Emma Cunniffe, Paula James, Colin Mace, Ed Mitchell and David Rubin, with Luke Hodkinson, Aristide Lyons, Zach Parkin, Tommi Sutton and Moses Ward.
Lindsay Posner directs Shaffer’s psychological drama, which centres on a psychiatrist’s attempt to understand what drove a teenage boy to commit an unthinkable act. The play has long been considered one of Shaffer’s modern masterpieces.
The creative team includes designer Paul Farnsworth, lighting designer Paul Pyant, composer and sound designer Adam Cork and movement director James Cousins.
Amanda Abbington’s extensive stage and screen credits include The Unfriend, The Son, God of Carnage and Sherlock. Bella Aubin, a recent RADA graduate, has appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bridge Theatre and Macbeth at the Lyric Hammersmith.
Emma Cunniffe returns to the Menier following Proof, while Paula James, Colin Mace, Ed Mitchell and David Rubin bring a wide range of theatre experience across the National Theatre, RSC and major regional venues.
Toby Stephens’ distinguished career spans work with the RSC, National Theatre, West End and Broadway, as well as numerous television and film roles including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Lost in Space and Die Another Day.
Noah Valentine, whose recent stage work includes Noughts and Crosses, appears as Alan Strang. His screen credits include Waterloo Road, Casualty and Good Boy.
