Hackney Empire has announced the title and full creative team for its 2025 Artist Development Programme (ADP) production, The Kindling, which will take place on Saturday 9 August.

Directed by award-winning theatre-maker Stef O’Driscoll, The Kindling will be devised and performed by 50 young artists aged 14–19 in just ten days, culminating in a powerful performance on the Hackney Empire main stage.

O’Driscoll, known for her socially charged and contemporary storytelling, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Her previous credits include A History of Water in the Middle East (Royal Court), With A Little Bit of Luck (BBC Radio & Music Awards), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Lyric Hammersmith), and Hopelessly Devoted (Kae Tempest).

For the first time, the concept for the ADP show has been developed by a steering group of 15 former participants. Working with ADP Associate Artists Danny Bailey, Mikey J Asante, Ellie Fulcher and Myah Jeffers, the group selected a concept by Joelthomas Coleallison as the foundation for this year’s production.

The Kindling tells the story of Joy, a beloved community figure whose death in a tragic fire sparks a journey of healing and truth-seeking. As the community grapples with loss, the production explores themes of remembrance, justice, and the power of collective voice.

“This powerful newly devised work explores what it means to be truly heard and what happens when a community chooses not to forget,” says the team.

The creative team includes returning ADP alumni and new collaborators, creating an intergenerational mix of talent. Notable names include Joelthomas Coleallison (Assistant Dramaturg and Concept Creator), Ty Lowe (Musical Director), Tjai Coleallison and Rianna Kellman (Associate Musical Directors), and Sandra Falase (Designer).

Tickets are available on a Choose What You Pay basis, with £10 recommended.
