George Devine Award Shortlist

The George Devine Award today announces its 2020 Shortlist of nine plays. Founded in 1966 in memory of the Royal Court’s founding Artistic Director George Devine, the Award is recognised as one of the most prestigious in new writing and seeks to shine a light on a playwright of promise. The winner will receive a prize of £15,000 in support of their future as a playwright. Former winners include Diana Nneka Atuona, Richard Bean, Alice Birch, Lucy Prebble and Rory Mullarkey.

Former GDA-winner and 2020 judge Roy Williams said:

‘The quality of the plays on the 2020 Shortlist is exceptional. They are a set of bold, diverse voices representing huge variety in style and subject matter. Amidst a very difficult year for theatre, it felt clear when discussing these plays with my fellow judges that there is a bright future to look towards for new writing when the industry reopens.’

The 2020 Shortlist is:

When Great Trees Fall by Dipo Baruwa-Etti

“AMBUSH” by Nick Redford & Richard Crawley !
(Inspired by the BBC’S Dr Who series)

With the world’s human population growing faster than on-land food production can sustain, Sea Farming is now seen as the imperative goal to ensure the survival of the human race.
A young teenage “DOC”, recently expelled from the Time Lord Academy on Gallifrey for allegedly cheating, is still trying to get to grips with the art of time travel’ whilst attending Cambridge University.
The Doc, finding himself on the highly top secret experimental “H.M.S. AMBUSH” out on its first sea trial, is about to discover it’s not all going to be plain sailing for himself, the crew and some unexpected highly excitable passengers !

How would you write a new James Bond in 2020!
The rules have certainly changed, every audience wants a representation of their ideologies and lifestyle.
” LIVING PAST ANOTHER DAY!” seeks to bond ( no pun intended ) classic Ian Fleming’s 007, with a nod to today’s sensitivities, whilst not compromising on a cracking good story, featuring memorable and beautiful characters, fighting the darker tones of mankind.
Written by two great unknown writers with a combined experience of over 100 years of Bond films and books.
    Coming in 2021!
(but we doubt you Bond fans, will want to wait that long! )
