A brand-new musical comedy inspired by the life of Grayson Perry will debut with a limited run at Soho Theatre Walthamstow this summer.
Grayson The Musical will play five preview performances from 16 to 19 July 2026, offering audiences an exclusive first look at the production ahead of future development.
Directed by double Olivier Award winner Sean Foley, the show charts Perry’s journey from an Essex working-class upbringing to becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
The musical explores themes of identity, creativity and self-acceptance, following Grayson as he navigates life’s challenges, including career setbacks, personal struggles and the search for belonging.
The production features music by Richard Thomas, book by Sara-Ella Ozbek, and lyrics and life story by Grayson Perry himself.
Blending irreverent humour with emotional honesty, the show promises a bold and unconventional take on the artist’s life, complete with unexpected elements such as a six-foot teddy bear life coach.
Grayson Perry said: “When I first started thinking about turning my life into a musical, I realised it already contained most of the essential ingredients – questionable fashion choices and class anxiety amongst them. Beneath all the comedy however, is a story about trying to work out who you are and if you can ever truly belong. A concept which many may relate to. I’m delighted that the show will be starting its life at Soho Theatre Walthamstow and excited to see what audiences make of it.”
Presented by Trafalgar Entertainment, Cuelight Productions and Sustainable Entertainment, the production is billed as a workshop staging that gives audiences early access to a new British musical in development.
