Greenwich Theatre Productions has announced full casting for its inaugural summer season, featuring new adaptations of Romeo & Juliet and The Little Mermaid: Song of the Sea, running in repertory from 3 July to 23 August 2026.
The productions will be performed by a single acting company, bringing together Shakespeare’s iconic love story with a reimagined fantasy adventure for audiences of all ages.
Running from 3 to 25 July, Romeo & Juliet is a new music-fuelled staging that reinterprets the classic tragedy for modern audiences.
The production stars Ava Honey in her professional debut as Juliet, alongside Blossom Timothy as Romeo, with supporting performances from Charlotte Harwood, Nikita Johal, Matt Penson and James Aldred.
Artistic Director James Haddrell said: “We are thrilled to be presenting this bold new version of Romeo & Juliet – though our decision to reimagine Romeo as a female character is far from radical. While the play certainly presents a Verona built on very strong gender roles, where the men are the rulers, the landowners, the warriors and the family leaders, the love story at the centre of the play is about two young people who fall desperately in love against a backdrop of violence, where lives can be all too easily cut short and the destinies of teenagers too often sit outside their control. That’s not a story about gender or sexuality – and nor should it be. It’s a universal story about parents who have lost touch with their children, and the extremes of emotion we can feel when we’re young.”
From 31 July to 23 August, the season continues with The Little Mermaid: Song of the Sea, a new adaptation that relocates the classic tale to the Cornish coast.
Written by Anthony Spargo, the production combines music, puppetry and character-led storytelling to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved story.
Nikita Johal leads the cast as the Little Mermaid, joined by Ava Honey, Matt Penson, Charlotte Harwood, James Aldred and Blossom Timothy.
The story follows a curious young mermaid who makes a dangerous deal with the Sea Witch in order to explore life on land, discovering the cost of trading her voice for love and freedom.
Both productions are directed by James Haddrell, with design by Jana Lakatos and lighting by Henry Slater, continuing Greenwich Theatre’s commitment to reimagining classic stories for contemporary audiences.
