Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run at the 2024 Edinburgh International Festival, Hamlet by Teatro La Plaza will return to Scotland for a limited engagement at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 November 2025.
This internationally celebrated production, which has toured to Melbourne, New York, Seoul, and London’s Barbican Centre, is directed by Chela De Ferrari and features a cast of actors with Down syndrome.
Inspired by the iconic “To be or not to be” soliloquy, Hamlet is a bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s tragedy. It blends original text with personal reflections and dynamic choreography to explore themes of identity, inclusion, and resilience.
Performed in Spanish with English subtitles, the production is described as “life-affirming” and “fearless,” challenging societal exclusion with humour, playfulness, and emotional depth.
Chela De Ferrari’s vision is brought to life by a talented ensemble including Octavio Bernaza, Jaime Cruz, Lucas Demarchi, Manuel Garcia, Diana Gutierrez, Cristina Leon Barandiaran, Ximena Rodriguez, and Alvaro Toledo.
Sharon Burgess, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts, said:
“Bringing this Hamlet to His Majesty’s Theatre ensures that audiences here in the northeast – and indeed across Scotland – have the chance to experience something extraordinary. For local audiences, this is a rare opportunity to witness a groundbreaking international production right here in Aberdeen. For those willing to travel, it is a chance to discover not just a remarkable piece of theatre, but also the vibrancy and warmth of our city’s cultural life.”
Teatro La Plaza, based in Lima, Peru, is renowned for its innovative and socially conscious theatre. Their work often reinterprets classic texts through a contemporary lens, provoking thought and dialogue within their community.
Hamlet runs for 1 hour and 35 minutes with no interval and is recommended for ages 12 and up.
