Royal & Derngate, Northampton has announced initial casting for the world premiere of Top Gs Like Me, a bold new play by Samson Hawkins (Village Idiot), directed by Artistic Director Jesse Jones (Education, Education, Education).
Running from 21 February to 7 March 2026, the production will transform the Derngate auditorium into a skatepark inspired by Northampton’s Radlands, creating an immersive experience for audiences.
The play interrogates the influence of online culture and the pull of toxic masculinity, exploring how digital algorithms and influential figures shape young minds in the search for identity.
Initial casting includes Danny Hatchard, best known for EastEnders, Our Girl and Ridley Road, and David Schaal, recognised for his roles in The Inbetweeners and The Office.
David Schaal commented:
“I’m genuinely excited to be working on Top Gs Like Me. The piece really resonates with me – it blends the reality of the world we live in with the surreal, unpredictable space of the internet in a way I find both gripping and necessary.
What really draws me to this project is how it explores the challenges Generation Z face in a world that’s constantly shifting beneath their feet – and how powerful online forces can warp, shape, or even define their sense of identity. It feels urgent, relevant, and deeply human.”
Danny Hatchard added:
“I’m chuffed to be part of a show that dives straight into how online culture shapes and warps young people today. Hugo Bang is a fascinating character to explore, and Samson’s writing doesn’t shy away from the tough questions. Performing this piece at Royal & Derngate feels like both a privilege and a meaningful responsibility.”
Top Gs Like Me is part of Royal & Derngate’s Made in Northampton season and aims to spark conversations with young audiences. Alongside performances, the theatre will deliver workshops, Q&A sessions, and a two-day conference for teachers and parents through its Beyond the Stage programme.
The creative team includes Rebecca Brower (Set & Costume Design), Rory Beaton (Lighting Design), Benjamin Grant (Sound Design), Kristian Wall (Casting), and Lauren Mooney (Dramaturgy).
