Interview: Matthew Baldwin on Sleeping Beauty Takes a Prick!

"There are occasions when the audience need to be disciplined a little. In those moments I pull out my considerable arsenal and give them both barrels. They don’t mind a lashing from my tongue!"

Matthew Baldwin

Matthew Baldwin stars as Queen Gertrude in Sleeping Beauty Takes a Prick! having starred as the Dame in eight Above the Stag Theatre pantomimes.

Sleeping Beauty Takes A Prick! is from the creative team behind the now-closed Above The Stag Theatre’s legendary Christmas shows, which placed gay characters front and centre in much-loved fairytales, adventures and legends.

Sleeping Beauty Takes A Prick! is at Charing Cross Theatre 23 November 2023 to 13 January, 2024.

You’re starring in Sleeping Beauty Takes a Prick! What can you tell us about this adult pantomime?

It’s the funniest, naughtiest and biggest hearted show in London. Sexy too!

It’s from the Above The Stag team, how does it feel to be bringing it to Charing Cross Theatre for the first time?

Obviously we made the show umpteen times for ATS but this year we have crossed the river and taken residence in a much bigger theatre. I feel immensely lucky for the past and very excited for the future! We can’t wait to show audiences this larger and naughtier show!

You keep coming back as Dame, what is it you love about playing the Dame?

As the Dame you’re front and centre which means  I get to talk with the boys, girls and other humans which is always fun! The material that Jon and Martin write for us is incredible and a real privilege to perform.

And what’s the (ahem) hardest thing about the part?

Slapping on all that makeup every day. And working in heels is tough on the lumbar!

You’re also an accomplished playwright, does this part give you the opportunity to ad-lib a bit?

There are occasions when the audience need to be disciplined a little. In those moments I pull out my considerable arsenal and give them both barrels. They don’t mind a lashing from my tongue!

What would you say to anyone thinking about booking for Sleeping Beauty Takes a Prick!?

Why are you coming alone?! Book two tickets (or more!) and bring someone who enjoys a naughty festive treat!
