You’re bringing Queen of the Moment to the Lyric Theatre, how would you describe the show?
It’s a lavish concert with a fabulous band, gowns, and gags! I literally belt my face off for a couple of hours, and pay tribute to Liza Minnelli and the great Dame Shirley Bassey, as well as songs from Queen of the Universe, my hit TV show.
You’re an Australian Musical Theatre icon, how did you first get into the industry?
All I ever wanted to do was musical theatre from when I was born. I auditioned and auditioned and got very close for years, until finally the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was staged and I was cast in that (with a role written especially for me). Now I’ve been lucky enough to star in Hairspray, The Producers, Les Mis, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph!
And how does it feel to be back appearing in the West End?
It’s a dream come true. I feel extremely grateful that I get to do this for a living, and have such a great time while performing. I did Liza at the Lyric, so I’m excited to be back.
You’re also a big name in Cabaret, what do you love most about this genre?
The intimacy of cabaret is wonderful. I really love to connect with an audience in that way. Cabaret has been a big part of my career, and I love what it has brought to my life. Also, I’ve been able to meet and work with the greats across the world and it’s like a family to me.
For audiences who watched you on Queen of The Universe can we expect some of your favourite musical numbers, and how did you decide which ones to include?
Well, you’ll see everything I have done on Queen of the Universe including The Rose, Me Too, Maybe This Time, River Deep Mountain High. I always find putting a show together a wonderful thing, getting to create moments that thrill people, make them laugh and have a ball. I want you laughing one minute and crying the next!
What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Queen of The Moment?
Do it! It’s the most fun you can have without the addition of a water based lubricant.
