Eastern Angles’ acclaimed production It Comes In Waves will transfer to London’s Finborough Theatre in spring 2027 following a sell-out tour across the East of England.
Presented by Eastern Angles in association with The Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft, and Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre, the play runs from 2 to 27 March 2027.
Written by James McDermott, It Comes In Waves is inspired by the playwright’s own experiences of loss following the death of his father during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Set in a fictional grief café in Lowestoft, the story follows three people navigating loss in different ways. Widow Crystal is determined to embrace life after the death of her husband, teenager Jordan struggles with losing his father, while group leader Howard focuses on helping others rather than confronting his own grief.
The production explores how grief, acceptance and understanding can take many forms, balancing humour with moments of reflection and emotional honesty.
Directed by Eastern Angles Artistic Director and CEO Jake Smith, the play examines the importance of community support while highlighting the changing landscapes of Suffolk’s coast. Although deeply rooted in East Anglia, its themes of loss and resilience speak to a universal experience.
Jake Smith said: “Our 45th anniversary year feels the perfect moment to bring It Comes in Waves to London. This transfer to the Finborough Theatre marks an important milestone in Eastern Angles’ mission as the storytelling organisation and touring theatre company for the East of England, continuing our championing of writers and artists and ensuring stories from our region are seen on a national stage.
“At its heart, It Comes in Waves is about grief, something that unites us all and reminds us of our shared humanity. Grief takes many forms throughout our lives, making this a deeply poignant and cathartic story to experience together. Yet it’s also filled with warmth, humour and hope, celebrating the resilience of communities and the power of human connection. We’re incredibly proud that this East Anglian story will now reach audiences in London.”
The production received strong acclaim during its previous run, with reviewers praising its blend of comedy and heartbreak, tender storytelling and emotional depth.
It Comes In Waves is recommended for audiences aged 15+ and contains themes of suicide and grief.
