Actor James Norton is supporting Propel, an innovative new programme from the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) aimed at young people aged 15 to 17 in the Scarborough area.

Running on fixed days between January and July 2026, Propel is a free initiative offering hands-on experience across all theatre departments.

James Norton, a patron of the SJT, credits his own career beginnings to work experience at the venue. He says:
“I did my work experience at the SJT and I saw how passionate the team was there. The SJT has always ensured that local young people have access to creative opportunities. I am thrilled to be supporting Propel and look forward to seeing the next generation of talent Scarborough has to offer.”

SJT Artistic Director Paul Robinson adds:
“At the SJT, we know how lucky we are to have jobs we love. That’s why we’re passionate about helping others to get into creative roles. Propel will provide a unique insight into the breadth of creative careers that can be found in theatre. We’re delighted to offer this innovative and free opportunity to young people committed to a career in the creative industries.”

Participants will explore creative preferences, join a team, and gain insight into the wider theatre network. Benefits include ticket discounts, invitations to press nights, and a backstage pass to departments from technical to marketing and design.
