Jane Asher and Samantha Womack will star in the new UK tour of By Royal Appointment, the debut play by Victoria creator Daisy Goodwin, it has been announced.
Directed by Anthony Banks, the production will open at Cambridge Arts Theatre on 21 September before touring to venues including Nottingham Theatre Royal, York Theatre Royal, Chichester Festival Theatre and Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury.
Asher will play The Queen, with Womack as her Dresser, in a story that explores the relationship behind the carefully curated public image of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
They are joined by David Robb as The Designer and Matthew Cottle as The Milliner.
The play examines how the monarch communicated through her wardrobe, presenting a portrait of a ruler whose personal voice was rarely heard in public.
Described as both funny and poignant, By Royal Appointment offers a behind-the-scenes look at the team responsible for shaping the Queen’s iconic appearance, and the power dynamics within that inner circle.
The production marks Goodwin’s debut play, following her success as the creator of ITV’s Victoria and her work as a novelist and producer.
The tour is co-produced by Daniel Schumann, Lee Dean and Cambridge Arts Theatre, with further venues set to be announced.
