English National Opera opens its 2025/26 Season with a bold new production of Cinderella (La Cenerentola), directed by International Opera Award-nominated Julia Burbach.
Running from 27 September to 14 October 2025, this contemporary reimagining of Rossini’s romantic opera is set in modern-day London, exploring themes of celebrity and identity.
The production features a new English translation by Christopher Cowell and replaces the traditional Fairy Godmother with a chorus of ancestral spirits, voiced by the ENO Chorus.
Director Julia Burbach said: “Let’s all remember how important it is to take humour seriously. Rossini certainly knew this when creating Cenerentola, a timeless classic filled with great characters, confusion, romance, passion, charm, beauty, laughter and an important human message. I hope we can bring the audience an evening at the theatre that makes them feel lighter on their feet when they leave.”
Making her ENO debut as Cinderella is Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny, praised for her expressive timbre and dynamic range. British tenor Aaron Godfrey-Mayes stars opposite her as Don Ramiro, having previously impressed in the same role at Nevill Holt Opera.
David Ireland performs as Alidoro, the Prince’s mentor, while Simon Bailey returns to the Coliseum as Don Magnifico, Cinderella’s father. Grace Durham and Isabelle Peters play the stepsisters Tisbe and Clorinda, respectively.
Charles Rice joins the cast as Dandini, Don Ramiro’s loyal valet. The production is conducted by Yi-Chen Lin, also making her ENO debut, leading the award-winning Orchestra of ENO.
Set design is by Herbert Murauer, with costumes by Sussie Juhlin-Wallén, lighting by Malcolm Rippeth, and choreography by Cameron McMillan.
