Norfolk & Norwich Festival have today announced legendary Malian/Cuban band Las Maravillas de Mali will join the 2019 Festival line up for a performance at Norwich Theatre Royal on Sunday 12 May with Mory Kanté.

The band, who defined the term ‘world music’ when they formed in the 1960s, come together on stage in the UK for the very first time on this tour. They are known for their effortless mix of Malian sounds and Cuban rhythms and their song ‘Rendez-vous chez Fatimata’ became one of the greatest hits of the revolutionary era in Africa. The band are joined on vocals by Guinean vocalist Mory Kanté.

Las Maravillas de Mali join the programme alongside already announced artists such as Adelaide based, internationally renowned contemporary circus company Gravity & Other Myths, seminal hip-hop dance company Boy Blue, Moliere Award-winner Victoria Thierrée Chaplin, Grammy-Award winning Chilly Gonzales, award-winning theatre company Hoipolloi and Thomas Adès and Britten Sinfonia.

The full programme is set to be announced in February.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival shares exceptional arts experiences across East England. The Festival collaborates with artists – from down the road and around the world – to explore the unique physical and cultural identities of the city and country and to make art which is contemporary, international and audience-centred.
