The National Theatre has opened applications for three major training programmes aimed at backstage careers.
Launching in November during Discover Creative Careers Month, the National Theatre Skills Centre—partnering with Bank of America—announces: the new Introduction to Stage Design, the return of Nationwide Young Technicians, and How to be a Producer.
These initiatives offer hands-on training, industry mentorship, and insight into crucial theatre roles with sessions led by professionals such as Georgia Lowe and Ellie Keel.
On 27 November, a special Careers Day in London will welcome over 100 secondary school students. Attendees will enjoy a stage management workshop led by Gemma Tonge and backstage tours.
Creative industry vacancies are rising—65% are hard to fill—while nearly half of young people don’t know the skills or qualifications needed. GCSE and A-Level Drama numbers are declining.
The National Theatre Skills Centre and Bank of America aim to close this gap with entry-level and mid-career training, apprenticeships, and placements. In 2024/25, over 4,800 young people benefited.
Kate Varah, Executive Director and Co-Chief Executive, says:
“The true craft of a performance goes far beyond what we see on stage … our programmes are essential to … sustaining the future workforce …”
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy says:
“To keep the magic of our creative industries alive, we must nurture a new generation … by demystifying creative jobs …”
Bernie Mensah, President of International, Bank of America, says:
“Bank of America’s partnership … demonstrates the importance … When public and private organisations work together, we unlock … drive economic and social mobility …”
