Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera will celebrate its landmark 40th anniversary in the West End with a newly announced international cast at His Majesty’s Theatre.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh has revealed a limited birthday season company led by Broadway star Jordan Donica as The Phantom, alongside Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé and Rhys Whitfield returning as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.
Joining them is Phantom favourite Sierra Boggess, who returns to the production as Carlotta Giudicelli, having previously played Christine in both the West End and the celebrated 25th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
The cast also includes Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin, Joseph Millson as Monsieur André, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry, Matt Bateman as Ubaldo Piangi and Millie Lyon as Meg Giry.
At certain performances, the role of Christine will be played by Colleen Rose Curran.
Cameron Mackintosh said: “I’m thrilled that this special birthday season of Phantom at His Majesty’s Theatre will be led by such a sensational cast alongside a brilliant ensemble – this is certainly going to be one of the finest casts ever of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical! Only two musicals in history have run continuously to packed houses for over 40 years… and counting, and I am very proud to be the producer of them both (the other being Les Misérables). The extraordinary resurgence of interest from young audiences all over the world to see this timeless gothic romance has been mirrored in the continued popularity of Andrew’s iconic score, which is now being excitedly discovered by new generations. I have no doubt that the music of the night will be thrilling audiences for many more decades to come and I’m delighted that the show that Andrew and I embarked on ‘just for the fun of it’ has become a phenomenon beyond our imaginations. Our gratitude to the public knows no bounds.”
Originally directed by Harold Prince, the production features Hal Prince’s celebrated staging and Gillian Lynne’s choreography, with updates introduced for its post-pandemic reopening in 2021 by Seth Sklar-Heyn and Chrissie Cartwright.
Maria Björnson’s iconic designs have been restored and enhanced, with additional work by Matt Kinley and Jill Parker, alongside lighting by Andrew Bridge and sound design by Mick Potter.
Since opening in 1986, The Phantom of the Opera has become one of the most successful musicals of all time, seen by over 160 million people across 217 cities in 52 territories and performed in 23 languages.
The musical tells the story of Christine Daaé, a young soprano who becomes the obsession of a mysterious masked figure known as The Phantom, a tormented musical genius.
As Christine is drawn into a complex relationship with The Phantom and her childhood sweetheart Raoul, a dramatic tale of love, jealousy and obsession unfolds against the backdrop of the Paris Opera House.
The anniversary performance on Friday 9 October 2026 is currently off sale, with audiences encouraged to sign up for updates via the production.
