Production images have been released for the world premiere of Dark of the Moon, now playing at Charing Cross Theatre until 8 August 2026.
The new musical stars Glenn Adamson as John, the Witch Boy, alongside Lauren Jones as Barbara Allen, leading a large ensemble cast in this supernatural love story.
Based on the 1941 play by Howard D Richardson and William Berney, Dark of the Moon blends witchcraft, folklore and romance in a tale set between a rural Appalachian town and the mystical Smoky Mountains.
The story follows the forbidden love between human girl Barbara Allen and curious witch-boy John, as they attempt to overcome prejudice and a dangerous pact made under the cover of darkness.
Directed by Georgie Rankcom, the production features a book by Jonathan Prince and music and lyrics by Lindy Robbins, Dave Bassett and Steve Robson, combining country, bluegrass and rock influences.
Georgie Rankcom said, “I’m so excited for this phenomenal company to take our audiences into the world of ‘Dark of the Moon’. It’s a beautiful piece that, at its heart, is about love and connection in the face of hatred and boasts a truly unforgettable score. We’re all so excited to share this story with you from 18 May”.
The wider cast includes Sue Appleby, Josie Benson, Jordan Broatch, Martin Callaghan, Sophia Duncan, David-Michael Johnson, Thomas-Lee Kidd, Al Knott, Kiah Lindsay, Gemma Maclean, Wills Mercado, Samuel Murray, Gary Turner and Appolilly Szwarc, with onstage swings Will Foggin, Vieve Hamilton and Nick Wyschna.
Originally created in the 1940s, the story of Dark of the Moon has endured through decades of international productions and has recently reappeared in popular culture through references in Stranger Things.
