Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has released new rehearsal images ahead of the UK premiere of Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, which runs from 18 March to 25 April 2026.

Written by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Monique Touko, the production reunites the creative team behind the 2023 hit School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play.

Following its 2023–2024 Broadway debut, the play became one of the most talked‑about productions of its season, earning two Tony Awards and multiple award nominations.

The UK staging marks the first time the show will be performed outside the US, presented in a new co‑production by Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, Madison Wells Live and Chase This Productions.

The cast includes Bola Akeju as Ndidi, Renee Bailey as Vanessa/Sheila/Radia, babirye bukilwa as Aminata, Zainab Jah as Jaja, Demmy Ladipo as James/Franklin/Olu/Eric and Dani Moseley as Michelle/Chrissy/Laniece.

They are joined by Sewa Zamba making their professional stage debut as Marie, Jadesola Odunjo as Miriam, Dolapo Oni as Bea and Karene Peter as Jennifer.

Jocelyn Bioh said: “It is the joy and honor of my life to have ‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’ make its UK premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith under the incredible direction of Monique Touko. In many ways, this play is about the power of love and community.”

Director Monique Touko added: “To be bringing Jocelyn Bioh’s Jaja’s African Hair Braiding to UK audiences is a real honour. Her stories contain heart, vibrancy and soul.”

Set over the course of a single summer’s day in a bustling Harlem braiding salon, the play explores sisterhood, ambition and the pressures facing women seeking a better life in New York City.

The creative team includes Paul Wills (Set Design), Cynthia De La Rosa (Wigs, Hair and Make‑Up Design), Jessica Cabassa (Costume Design), Simisola Majekodunmi (Lighting Design), Tony Gayle (Sound Design) and Dick Straker (Video Design).

Movement direction is by Kloé Dean, with casting by Julia Horan CDG.

Press night will take place on Friday 27 March.
