Half concert, half musical, A Tribute to Dalida! at Sadler’s Wells’ Peacock Theatre celebrates the life and work of the eponymous singer and actress. A true icon of the 1960s – 1980s, Dalida gifted the world timeless hits like Paroles Paroles, Love in Portofino, and Salma Ya Salama, all featured in this vibrant homage.
Directed by Sam Rayner and choreographed by Christopher Tendai, the show charts Dalida’s life from childhood memories of quiet family life and a growing passion for music, to her rise through beauty pageants, acting, and finally, international musical stardom. Audiences travel with her across decades and continents, enjoying a multilingual repertoire—Italian, French, English, and Arabic—that proves just how far-reaching her appeal remains. While some younger viewers may not know her name, almost everyone will recognise at least a few of her songs.
Portrayed by Mikayella Stephan, Dalida is depicted as vulnerable, yet resilient—always striving for the next chapter, whether in love, personal growth, or music. Stephan is joined by four dancers who alternate between portraying family members, lovers, and other characters, and performing as traditional backing dancers. The latter feels more effective, particularly in the second half of the show. Here, their presence supports Dalida’s image as a dazzling star, rather than diluting her story with loosely sketched character work. A live band remains on stage throughout, reflecting Dalida’s enduring love of music.
Visuals play a strong supporting role, with a mix of archival photos and themed backdrops projected onto the rear stage screen. The minimalist set design evokes both the architecture of Italy and the South of France, as well as the aesthetic of retro television galas and concert stages. Dramatic lighting and a flurry of costume changes add glamour and momentum.
Yet, throughout the evening, a certain imbalance lingered. The production felt too modest for a proper West End tribute to a diva of Dalida’s stature, yet too busy and overdesigned to offer a truly intimate portrait. Some concert-like moments sparked joy, with the audience dancing and singing along. But these were offset by prolonged lulls, when the show seemed caught between two worlds. With polished biographical musicals like MJ the Musical and Tina just around the corner, A Tribute to Dalida! has room to grow.
Still, as a celebration of Dalida’s legacy, A Tribute to Dalida! at Peacock Theatre offers a welcome opportunity to reconnect with a global icon and rediscover her extraordinary musical heritage.
