Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyFor some people the pandemic lockdown was a much needed break from the stresses of the world. They baked bread, did Joe Wicks workouts and made TikTok accounts. For others it was a much harder time. Sickness, isolation, and financial worries all compounded making people slip into a dark cloud of depression and anxiety. Who do you turn to in unprecedented times? Well in Here You Come Again at the New Wimbledon Theatre we turn to the country and western icon Dolly Parton. Directed by Gabriel Barre, this heartwarming jukebox musical blends Dolly’s greatest hits with a touching and humorous story of self-discovery and resilience.

Set during the COVID-19 lockdown, the story centres on Kevin, a devoted Dolly Parton fan who, after a breakup, finds himself isolated in his childhood attic. Surrounded by Dolly memorabilia, Kevin’s imagination conjures a fantastical version of Dolly Parton herself. This larger than life figure guides him through his personal struggles, offering wisdom, humour, and, of course, music. Together, they navigate themes of loneliness, self-discovery, and resilience, all underscored by Dolly’s timeless hits.

Steven Webb delivers a compelling performance as Kevin, capturing the character’s vulnerability and charm with frenetic energy and moments of heartbreaking insecurity. Webb’s portrayal resonated with anyone who has faced isolation and heartache, making Kevin’s journey both relatable and heartfelt.

Opposite Webb, Tricia Paoluccio embodies Dolly Parton with remarkable authenticity. Her portrayal went beyond mere imitation; she channeled Dolly’s spirit, charisma, and vocal prowess, creating a dynamic and endearing presence on stage. The chemistry between Webb and Paoluccio formed the emotional core of the production, driving the narrative forward with both humour and poignancy.

It took a little while to settle into the meat of Here You Come Again but Webb and Paoluccio carried the audience along with them masterfully. Their skillful adlibbing made minor gaffs a delightful part of the experience. They formed a bond with their audience in a way which is rarely found in a theatre production, drawing them in to be a part of the story unfolding. By the end of the first act they had captivated everyone.

Unfortunately, in the second act the energy dropped a little. This was partly because many of Dolly Parton’s more well known songs had already been used in the first act. This, coupled with the more somber energy of the second act did disrupt the pacing of the narrative slightly. However, Webb and Paoluccio’s performances were so genuine and heartfelt that this lapse must be forgiven and overall the production was a strong one.

Here You Come Again is a heartfelt and entertaining tribute to Dolly Parton’s enduring influence. Through a blend of classic songs and a contemporary storyline, the musical explores themes of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of music. With beautiful performances from Steven Webb and Tricia Paoluccio, and a thoughtful production design, the show offers both fans and newcomers an engaging theatrical experience. Whether you’re a lifelong Dolly enthusiast or simply in search of an uplifting story, this production promises to leave you smiling and inspired.
