Robert Bathurst is set to return to his award-winning role in the critically acclaimed immersive production of Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell at The Coach & Horses pub in Soho.
Following overwhelming demand and four sold-out seasons, the one-hour staging once again places audiences inside Jeffrey Bernard’s favourite Soho haunt on Greek Street.
Written by Keith Waterhouse and adapted and directed by James Hillier, the production has been named a Times Critic’s Pick of the Week and saw Bathurst win Best Actor at the London Pub Theatre Standing Ovation Awards.
The immersive show is performed in the bar itself, with audiences sharing the space as Bernard recounts his chaotic life after falling asleep in the pub’s gents and waking up locked in overnight.
Bathurst described the production today, saying: “Perfect. A play about being stuck in a pub in Soho, played to an audience stuck in a pub in Soho. Warning: this show contains references to Smoking, Gambling, Alcohol and Sex. Most problematic of all, it also contains Humour.”
The play centres on the notorious Soho journalist, known for missed deadlines, failed marriages and a life of uninterrupted drinking, who fills the small hours regaling stories of bookies, cat racing and questionable pub tricks.
Adapted from Waterhouse’s celebrated West End play, the production has become a cult hit for its intimacy, comedy and sharp evocation of Soho’s bohemian past.
Performances run on selected Sunday and Monday evenings throughout March at The Coach & Horses, with seated and standing tickets available.
