The Royal Court Theatre and Sherman Theatre have announced the full cast and creative team for Monument, a new play by Rhys Warrington that will premiere at the Royal Court as the final production in the theatre’s landmark 70th anniversary year.
Directed by Sherman Theatre Artistic Director Francesca Goodridge, Monument will run in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs from 3 December 2026 to 23 January 2027, before transferring to Sherman Theatre in Cardiff from 29 January to 13 February 2027.
The production follows an early sharing at the Royal Court’s 2025 Open Submissions Festival and marks Warrington’s Royal Court debut.
The full cast comprises Crystal Condie, Ifan Huw Dafydd, Joshua Griffin, Anna Lundberg, Sharon Morgan, Lisa Palfrey and Gwydion Rhys.
The creative team includes designer Cai Dyfan, lighting designer Ryan Joseph Stafford, sound designer and composer Nicola T. Chang, casting director Saffeya Shebli and costume supervisor Amy Trigg.
Set in a Welsh farming community fractured by tragedy, Monument invites audiences into a village hall debate over a proposed memorial. The production features two possible endings, with the outcome determined by an audience vote.
Described as a portrait of a close-knit community wrestling with its past, future and the politics of remembrance, the play asks audiences to consider how collective memory is shaped and who gets to decide what is remembered.
Rhys Warrington said: “I’m bouncing off the walls with excitement to be working with this absolute dynamite cast. These characters have lived in my head for such a long time, so to have assembled such exceptional Welsh, English and International artists to finally bring them alive is an incredible honour. I can’t wait to get going and, more importantly, for audiences to finally meet them.”
Francesca Goodridge said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be stepping into the rehearsal room with this incredible group of actors. To finally hear Rhys’s words jump off the page and come to life through artists with this level of skill and instinct is a director’s dream. They’re such a talented, generous group of performers, add to that a cracking creative team, and I really feel we’ve got something very special on our hands.”
Monument is co-produced by the Royal Court Theatre and Sherman Theatre, with support from the Colwinston Charitable Trust. Warrington is also the recipient of the second Davidson PlayGC Bursary, supported by PlayGC Theatre Company and the Alan Davidson Foundation.
The production’s press night will take place on 9 December 2026 at the Royal Court.
