Side by Side by Sondheim will be staged at Upstairs at the Gatehouse from 10 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, marking 50 years since the celebrated revue first premiered in London.

Originally debuting in 1976, the production celebrates the first half of Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking career, showcasing songs that helped redefine the modern musical.

Featuring an array of hits and lesser-known gems from shows including Company, Follies and West Side Story, the fast-paced revue will be performed by a quartet of all-singing, all-dancing, all-piano-playing performers.

The production features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, alongside music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne. The original continuity is by Ned Sherrin, and the revue was originally produced on Broadway by Harold Prince in association with Ruth Mitchell.

The creative team includes director Amanda Noar, associate director and dramaturg Isaac Bernier-Doyle, musical director Harry Style, set designer Ruby Boswell-Green, lighting designer Simon Jackson, costume designer Hannah Danson and producer Annlouise Butt.

Speaking about the production, Annlouise Butt (Executive Director) and Isaac Bernier-Doyle (Artistic Director) of Upstairs at the Gatehouse said: “Having explored Sondheim’s late work with ROAD SHOW in 2024, we couldn’t resist rewinding to the other end of the timeline to spend this holiday season immersed in the first act of his extraordinary career. Half a century after SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM first opened, we can’t wait to welcome another hundred people to the top of Highgate Hill each night to bask in the warm glow of some of the smartest, deepest, and least festive songs they’ll hear all winter.”

Side by Side by Sondheim runs at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Highgate, from 10 December 2026 until 17 January 2027, with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3pm.
