The Tower Theatre Company is set to present The Children by Lucy Kirkwood from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 24 May 2025 at the Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington, London.

Set in a small, isolated cottage by the sea with an eroding coastline, The Children explores the reunion of Hazel, Robin, and Rose after nearly 40 years. In the wake of a nuclear accident, the trio grapples with the responsibility their generation owes to the next, as a lifetime of resentments, jealousies, and lies are exposed in this gripping, powerful, and witty play.

The Children premiered at the Royal Court in 2016 and on Broadway in 2017 to widespread critical acclaim. Director Jonathan Reed shares his thoughts: “What I love about the play is that it has this perfect balance – it’s a serious play about climate change, one of the most important issues of our age, yet it’s funny, and witty, and razor sharp.”

Jonathan Reed, who has directed several productions at the Tower Theatre, including Seagulls by Caryl Churchill, brings his expertise in improvisation to this production. Reed is also one of the Assistant Artistic Directors at the Tower.

Lucy Kirkwood, known for her politically charged plays such as Mosquitoes, Chimerica, and NSFW, as well as family favorites like Hansel and Gretel, Beauty and the Beast, and The Witches, continues to make an impact with her work. Her short plays, including Bloody Wimmin and Maryland, address significant social issues and have been performed to raise awareness and funds for various causes.
