The North in 100 Songs

Sage Gateshead is calling on people to reveal their favourite Northern song as part of a second wave of Great Exhibition of The North events announced by the music venue. The North in 100 Songs will see an exclusive ‘Great Northern All-Star Band’, led by Field Music, perform some of the top chosen tracks and Manchester-based illustrator Stanley Chow create a series of portraits of the top 100 voted artists.

Tamsin Austin, Director of Performance Programme at Sage Gateshead, said: “Whether you sang along with The Futureheads at Glastonbury, or you’re loving IAMDDB’s latest track; if West End Girls was the first single you bought or if Valerie is your Karaoke song, Sage Gateshead wants to know which northern song you love the most using the hashtag #NorthIn100Songs or by voting on our website.

“We’re asking the public to nominate whichever song they think best sums up the North for them – either about the North, for the North or by those from the North.”

Stanley Chow has worked for Manchester United and Apple and in 2008 a collaboration with the White Stripes was nominated for a GRAMMY. His portraits will be exhibited at Sage Gateshead throughout the Great Exhibition of the North. Peter and David Brewis from Field Music will be putting together the exclusive Great Northern All-Star Band. The band, who will perform a selection of the chosen songs with special guests, will form part of Sage Gateshead’s Great Northern Soundtrack curated by Lauren Laverne. The All-Star Band will include other special guests from the North and will be a not to be missed, one-off concert on Saturday 23 June.

Stanley said: “Though the UK on the whole produces great creative talent, this is a nice reminder that much of the talent can be found in the North of England. I am really chuffed that I have been asked to be part of the Great Exhibition of the North. Hopefully I can entertain some folk and also maybe inspire younger artists in the North that you can make a career out of doing something you love.”
