Trainspotting The Musical will embark on a major UK tour later this year, following its world premiere in London’s West End.
Presented by Phil McIntyre Live and Live Nation Gaiety, the tour opens at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 19 October and will run through to March 2027.
Written by Irvine Welsh and directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the musical is adapted from Welsh’s best-selling debut novel and reimagines the cult story for the stage thirty years after the film’s release.
Set against the backdrop of contemporary Britain, the production brings Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly back to life, exploring addiction, powerlessness and the shifting nature of modern dependencies.
Robbie Scott will play Renton, joined by fellow Scottish actors Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, Frankie O’Connor as Begbie and Finlay Paul as Tommy.
The cast also includes Rebecca McKinnis, Gordon Cooper, Ashley J. Russell, Rosie Dignan, Yana Harris and Sophie Hutchinson, alongside an ensemble featuring Ally Kennard, Kieran Brown, Melanie Marshall, Lewis Kidd, Samuel Stewart, Finlay McKillop, Ciara Ennis, Victoria Nicol, Kyra Fyvie and Chris O’Mara.
Irvine Welsh said: “I believe the musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off. It’s what being human is all about. We’ve put together an incredible Scottish cast and I can’t wait to see them bring the musical to life.”
The show features new songs with music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh, alongside electrifying tracks from the original film soundtrack that defined a generation.
With performances scheduled across the UK including Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and a return to Edinburgh, the production is described as radical, invigorating and life-affirming.
