A world premiere stage musical adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting will storm into the West End this summer as Trainspotting The Musical opens at Theatre Royal Haymarket on Wednesday 15 July 2026.
Written by Welsh and directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the new production marks three decades since the groundbreaking 1996 film became a cultural phenomenon. The musical promises to deliver a bold, high-energy experience that captures the rebellious spirit of the original story while offering a fresh perspective for a new generation.
Scottish actor Robbie Scott, aged 26, will make his West End debut in the role of Renton, the character originally played on screen by Ewan McGregor. Further casting will be announced shortly.
Irvine Welsh said: “This musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. The various stage adaptations of Trainspotting have become acclaimed and moving theatrical experiences and the soundtrack to the movie is obviously iconic. So it made sense to put the music and words together to create an explosive, provocative and entertaining show. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also really need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off – it’s what being human is all about – and they’ll be well served with this too.”
The musical will feature electrifying tracks from the film alongside original songs with music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh. It is described as a genre-defining new work that speaks to the uncertainty and defiance of contemporary life.
The creative team includes set and costume designer Colin Richmond, musical supervisor and music director Stuart Morley, video designer Douglas O’Connell, choreographer Christina Andrea, lighting designer Ian Scott and sound designer Rory Madden for Sonalyst. Denise Ranger serves as associate director, with Anne Vosser as casting director.
Performances run Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with matinees on Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm. The production has an age guidance of 15+.
